Maykel Lima

Maykel Lima is one of my favourite photographers, especially for this subject of 'Abnormal'. The Madrid based photographer often uses models focusing on their face and body. He often distorts the images, making them feel alienated and futuristic. Some of his images however have a much darker effect. Lighting is a large part of this creepy and dark feel. By placing the model in a dark room and having harsh lighting directed onto one small specific area. It almost gives a feel of interrogation, or something coming out from the dark. I feel this is a good example of what could stand for paranormal/supernatural photography. What I admire in Lima’s work the most is how he distorts his images in so many different ways. Lima uses different focusing techniques, different lighting techniques such as very harsh lighting directly on the faces of the models to make a slightly over exposed images, to very low lighting that simply creates a silhouette and shadows of the model to give a dark mysterious feel and also uses different techniques in the result of his photographs; for example, some of his images simply look like they haven’t been edited and it’s come straight from the camera however others have had a lot of work on computer editing, whether it be, cutting techniques, double exposure techniques, smudging, or dragging the image to make it look distorted.
