Lee Kirby
Lee Kirby is a British photographer who bases his work around, as he say, 'a bit of everything'. Kirby mainly works around fashion and portrait photography working for the likes of Ministry Of Sound, Canon UK, London Grammar and Calvin Klein.
I am interested in Kirby's projection photography work, which he called 'Pro-Ject'. In these projection shoots, Kirby also uses slow shutter speed, similar to Maykel Lima.
In order to do a projector shoot, two or more shoots are needed; One to have images projected, and the others are the outcomes of what the pictures have been projected onto and then photos taken of those projections. Kirby uses what looks like city landscapes, perhaps usuing slow shutter when photogaphing traffic/lights. In some photos, Kirby has also inverted the pictures and given the complete opposite effect between positive and negative lighting. I like the idea of inverted photos with the originals as it gives contrast within the shoot and not just the single photos.
I really like the slow shutter speed in all the photos, the landscape and the portrait and the blur and distortion it creates. I also like the colours used in the landscape photos used to project onto the models. The colours vary from yellows, reds and oranges to blues, greens and lilacs. These colours stand out massively as the light from the proector gives them vibrance and brightness.
My idea based on Kirbys work is also a projection shoot. In relevance with my theme of 'Eyes' I have decided to ask people: 'In your eyes, what is the most important thing in the world?'. I will then photograph things based on their answers, and them project these 'answer pictures' onto models.
