SHOOT 7 - SHAVING SHOOT

This shoot was based around the idea of seeing into the body builders more personal day to day life. As the project has developed, I began to look at the mental side more than the physical and how he was coping with the training mentally. Focusing on day to day routines, feelings, energy levels was looking into how powerful his mind was over his body. Josh "My body can do it, I'm strong enough, I'm powerful enough and I'm capable enough but my mind is the thing I need to overcome."

Although this is a physical preparation to the bodybuilding competition, I feel like the editing in this shoot is a lot lighter. I wanted a less harshly edited shoot, as it was something nowhere near as intense as the workouts or checking up on body progress. For this shoot I used a naturally lit environment and an environment that wasn’t set up purposely for the shoot. I felt this was important, as the purpose was to capture natural environment and an everyday feeling. What could have improved this shoot are maybe more images of Josh actually doing the hair removal instead of just photographing steps of the process. Unlike the previous shoots, I wanted to keep this one in colour. Again, there reason behind this was to keep the normality and keep it natural looking. This shoot is very successful because of the attention to detail of his body. This time the muscles and veins aren’t the main focus (although they appear to be after the hair removal process). I also like the focus of these photos. The model is in clear focus however whatever objects in the background are not. This makes the image feel more realistic as if that’s how we would focus on if we were there and it wasn’t an image. I feel what makes this shoot successful is that the idea of it is unconventional; very masculine man doing quite a feminine routine. I feel this this idea gives an insight to how much the bodybuilders actually out themselves through, in terms of physical endurance and strength, and time consuming regimes that may seem unconventional. This portrays a character that is willing to do a lot for his sport and portrays a message of power.

In my opinion these are the two most successful images of the shoot. I think that these images pay such close attention to detail and have been edited well for the lighting, shadows and contrast to complement the detail and to portray the theme of this shoot. What I like about these two images is that it shows the models skin aggravated, red and bare. I increased saturation on these images to highlight this red area. This shows pain and irritation – a theme relevant to this entire project and sport of bodybuilding. I like the attention to detail because of how easy we can see mess, such as the untidy work on removing his hair. These images represent power because of the patience and tolerance needed to prepare by doing things like this every few days and sometimes the pain of doing these things, especially when the bodybuilder is deprived of energy.
